Business seminars set for Maui The Maui County Business Resource Center plans a series of workshops for Maui residents who want to start their own businesses. The first is this week. "Starting a Business on Maui," will be offered by Anna Ribucan of the County of Maui's Office of Economic Development on Wednesday, Oct. 27, from noon to 1 p.m. at the resource center's office in the Maui Mall. This seminar will cover general information and requirements to starting a business. Handouts, Web sites and helpful information will be included. This is but the first of a series of talks, however, and all of them are open to the public for free: "Score with S.C.O.R.E.," will be on Wednesday, Nov. 3, from noon to 1 p.m. Do you have a business idea but don't know how to start? Do you need money for your business? Are you struggling with the seemingly insurmountable obstacles of running your business? Would you like to make your business more profitable? Providing answers to such questions will be volunteers from S.C.O.R.E., the Service Core of Retired Executives. "Does Your Business Need a Website?" will be offered on Wednesday, Nov. 10, from noon to 1 p.m. Most seminars on this topic are given by people who sell Web design or Web hosting services. But in this case the speaker will be Robert Kellogg, director of technology training at Maui Community College. "Pleasing Customers with Good Phone Skills," will be on Wednesday, Nov. 17, from noon to 1 p.m. Melissa Yoshioka of Maui Community College will speak. "Putting a Stop to Agriculture Theft" will be on Wednesday, Nov. 24, from noon to 1 p.m. Recent thefts on Maui have made it imperative that farmers protect their crops. Are goods sold at local farmer markets illegally procured? What tools are in place to combat the problem? Join a discussion on awareness, prevention and consequences of agricultural theft led by Kenneth Yamamura of the Maui County Office of Economic Development. "Entrepreneurship Talk Story" sessions are on Fridays from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Established and startup entrepreneurs as well as business service providers are welcome to share challenges, solutions, brainstorming and networking with David Fisher of Hawaii Small Business Development. Seating is limited and workshops are offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Participants are asked to bring their own lunches.
