Tourist Traffic Rises above levels from same time last year Weekend arrivals: 40,813 The more than 40,000 people who flew to Hawaii on Saturday and Sunday represented an increase of nearly 2,500 arrivals from the commensurate weekend last year, an analysis of state passenger counts shows. Domestic arrivals actually ran below year-ago levels on Maui and Kauai, but rose more than 500 on the Big Island, to nearly 2,300, and rose more than 1,800 on Oahu, to more than 20,000. International arrivals also rose. In the following data, the first number in each line is the total of arrivals on Saturday and Sunday, while the parenthetical number is from the comparable weekend of 2003. Arrivals from the mainland: To Honolulu: 20,078 (18,190). To Maui: 5,843 (6,137). To Big Island: 2,284 (1,744). To Kauai: 1,176 (1,465). Total: 29,381 (27,536). Arrivals from foreign locales: From Japan: 9,473 (9,332). From elsewhere: 1,659 (1,460). Total: 11,432 (10,792). Grand total: 40,813 (38,328).
