Visitor arrivals spike to 115% of year-before levels Conventioners appear to have caused a spike in visitor arrivals as measured by the weekly tourism count transmitted by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau. For the seven days through Nov. 14, which was Thursday of last week, domestic arrivals as counted by the state were up 18 percent from year-before levels while Japanese arrivals were down 1 percent. Total arrivals were up 15 percent. This came days before three separate conventions in the islands: The homeland security conference at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, which drew hundreds of official delegates but many more unofficial attendees. A conference of meeting planners at the Hawaii Convention Center, with events beginning Wednesday. It is possible that some of the 550 registered attendees and their families came last week to combine pleasure with business. The Insurance Conference Planners Association has been holding its own annual meeting on Maui this week, with about 500 registrants.
